Florida explorer in nature

Our Story

Built by Floridians. For Travelers Who Want More.

Explorer Florida was born from a simple frustration: the best places in Florida are almost never the ones that show up first.

How It Started

It started with a road trip. A long weekend, a rental car, and a list of "top-rated" hotels pulled from the usual suspects. Every one of them was a chain. Every restaurant recommendation led to the same strip mall. Florida — one of the most ecologically and culturally extraordinary places on earth — had been reduced to a highlight reel of things that could be anywhere.

We knew there was another Florida. We'd seen it: a 12-room inn on the Ichetucknee River where the owner leaves kayaks on the dock and the breakfast uses produce from the garden. A fish house in Destin where the boats unload your dinner while you eat. A Victorian B&B in St. Augustine where the ghost tour guide is also a historian who's been doing this for 20 years.

Explorer Florida is our attempt to make that Florida findable. Every listing is independently owned, verified at 4.5 stars or above on Google, and chosen because it offers something a chain hotel or a franchise restaurant never could.

Our Editorial Mission

We only list what we'd genuinely recommend to a friend.

Verified 4.5★ Minimum

Every business on Explorer Florida holds a 4.5-star or above Google rating. No exceptions. We check. We recheck. We remove listings that slip.

Independently Owned

We don't list chains. Every stay, restaurant, and experience on this platform is independently owned and operated. The people who built it are usually the ones who run it.

Genuinely Curated

We don't accept payment for placement. A listing earns its spot by being exceptional — not by having a marketing budget. Our revenue comes from affiliate commissions on bookings, not from featured placement fees.

Real Florida

We're interested in the Florida that doesn't make the postcards. The springs most visitors never find. The fish houses that have been there for 40 years. The state parks that fill up by 9am because the people who know about them don't tell anyone.

The People Behind It

Explorer Florida is a small team of writers, photographers, and obsessive Florida travelers. We are not a media company. We are not a booking platform that happens to have editorial. We are travelers first.

Former park ranger, current kayak enthusiast. Has swum in more Florida springs than most people know exist. Writes about wildlife with the precision of someone who has been charged by an alligator.

Grew up in Tarpon Springs. Has strong opinions about grouper. Will not review a restaurant she hasn't eaten at twice.

Our Standards

We hold ourselves to the same standard we hold our listings. Here's exactly how we operate.

Browse our listings

We visit before we list

Every property and experience on Explorer Florida has been personally visited or verified by a member of our team or a trusted local contributor.

We don't accept paid placement

Listings are earned, not bought. Our revenue model is affiliate commissions — we earn a small fee when you book through our links, at no extra cost to you.

We remove listings that decline

A 4.5★ rating is a living standard, not a one-time badge. We monitor our listings and remove any that fall below our threshold.

We update constantly

Florida changes. Restaurants close. New gems open. We treat our listings as a living document, not a static directory.

Know a Hidden Gem?

If you know a place in Florida that deserves to be on Explorer Florida — a boutique hotel, a fish house, a spring, an experience — we want to hear about it.
